Whale watching is popular tourist pastime and rightfully so. These majestic mammals are worthy of our undivided attention. During the fall and spring if you spend some time along the Oregon beaches you just might spot a migrating pod of whales. Watch fro the whales breaching and spouting. The Sperm whales, Gray whales, and Humpback whales also pass through during the during the winter and summer providing an opportunity for perhaps just a glimpse. The Sperm and Humpback Whales might be a little more elusive as they are still endangered. But you stand a good chance of spotting a gray whale whose numbers are on the rise.

Winter whale watching lasts usually runs the last week of December through the first week of January while summer whale watching runs the last week of August through the first week of September.

If you want to get a little closer than take a whale watching charter along the Oregon Coast. There are plenty to choose from! The charter boat operators know where to head to get the best vantage point. Be sure to bring your camera!

Lighthouses are also popular along the Oregon coast and many have opened the observation posts for viewing. These are also a great place to spot the whales and the tour of the lighthouse is quite the experience too!

Now there’s no question that the whales are pretty majestic but so is the scenery in Oregon. So once your finished trying to connect with the whales why not hit the road and explore the scenic byway?

Here you’re going to find vistas that will leave you breathless, you’ll see wildlife that will intrigue you, you’ll discover both ancient and modern history along the way and you’ll have a lifetime of memories to share with friends and family.

The Cascade Lakes Byway is a 3 to 5 hour drive that will provide an amazing backdrop of majestic mountains as you wind your way through the mountain roads. But why rush? Stop and enjoy some challenging rock climbing or explore one of the many hiking trails. Be sure to stop by Crane Prairie Reservoir and if time permits stay at Deschutes National Forest.

It’s a recreational dream! This 1.8 million acre area could take a lifetime to explore. It’s home to 157 lakes and 6 rivers. There are over 1400 miles of trails to explore and you can hike, fish, raft, canoe, kayak, and of course camp. Why not stay awhile? The Cascades are calling you!

The Hells Canyon Byway will change the way you think about nature! It’s dramatic, breathtaking, and unbelievable beautiful. Just as you think you’ve seen the most beautiful place on earth along will come another scenic view that will take your breath away. This 8 hour drive will take you from the mountains to the valleys, along the river, and then up into the mountains again.

The Columbia River Byway takes around 5 hours and will have you enjoying the beauty of the crystal clear river for almost 50 miles. With every twist and turn comes another natural treasure from the exhilarating waterfalls to the tops of the cliffs.

Multnomah Falls is the second highest waterfall in all of the US and it drops a whopping 620 feet. If you’re in shape there’s a steep trail that takes you above the falls for an unforgettable view.

The Historic Columbia River Trail is open to hikers and bikers and there are trails suitable for all levels from the very easy to the very tough. There is some camping along the way. Be sure to also stop by Bridal Veil Falls which is just a short walk from the parking area.

The McKenzie Pass Byway takes you up to the highest snowcapped volcanoes in the US and enjoy the breathtaking view of The Three Sisters, and Broken Top Mountain, as well as several waterfalls. You’ll see ancient lava fields near the crystal clear lakes from a time long gone.

The Pacific Coast Byway takes about 12 hours to complete. Plan to spend the night along the way if you’ve got the time. This Pacific Coast Byway runs the entire length of the Oregon coast. Here you’ll see lush temperate rain forests, sandy beaches in contrast with rugged cliffs, with farm land mixed among mother natures scenery.

Along the way you’ll find many attractions worth visiting. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is one of the best in the country featuring both indoor and outdoor exhibits. The Mark O Hatfield Marine Science Center is the hub of coastal research for the Oregon State University. There’s a wing that’s open to the public so come see what’s happening with this most important research!

There are many other byways worth exploring. The Outback will take your through some of the more rugged terrain in Oregon including the Great Basin Country where you’ll find volcanic remains and fossils along the way. The Volcanic Byway takes you along Crater Lake to Mount Lassen where you’ll develop a new respect for the power of mother nature. The West Cascades Byway runs from Portland to Eugene providing a scenic drive that incorporates waterfall, rapids, lush old growth forests, and pristine lakes.
