If you are planning a holiday you want to make sure you are going to have a good time. Whether you’ll be traveling alone, with a spouse, or as a family you don’t want any surprises and you want your vacation to be fun for everyone. So how should you choose your hotel when you travel?
Start by surfing the internet. There you’ll be provided with a host of sites that can help you choose the right hotel. These days most hotels have their own web site so you can read about what they have to offer, look at the pictures of the hotel and grounds, and find out their rates.
There is one slight problem however, just like in advertising hotel web sites tend to put on their best digs and show you images of a magnificent building with a breathtaking view. So how you tell which really are wonderful and affordable and which are affordable but not so wonderful?
When most people book hotel accommodations they choose mainly on the price of the room. Too often you decide where you are going and then choose a hotel based on the prices you are given. This might be the reason for all those hotel horrors we read about.
You need to be just a little bit more investigative when it comes to choosing your hotel. This result in a lot less disappointments.
After you’ve done your searching online and found a dozen or so hotels that you think would work for you, it’s then time to check the hotel’s rating. You can do this by reading reviews that previous guests have left, and by checking the actual rating of the hotel. For example 3 star or 5 star. The higher the stars the better the overall facilities and services of the hotel.
If you are booking with a hotel chain you can have a much better idea of what to expect because almost all chains have stringent standards that must be met by their affiliates. The usually even have similar facilities such as a swimming pool, hot tub, or shuttle service. If you have a local hotel from the chain take a trip to find out how clean it is, what the décor and atmosphere are like. This will give you an indication if it’s someplace you’d like to stay.
When you are selecting your hotel if you are not going to have access to a vehicle then it’s especially important that you choose a hotel that is located near shopping, bus stops, and subway stations. Get a good map of the area you are going to be vacationing at and then try to determine which area would be most beneficial to stay in.
There are a variety of rates and discounts available depending on whether you travel off season or peak season. When booking a room always ask if there are any discounts available. Some hotels have also teamed up with other services for a discounted price such as car rental agencies or tours that are offered. You may also have a credit card that entitles you to a discount if you stay at certain hotels.
Remember that just because you pay more doesn’t mean you’ll get a better room or better service. Some of the most economically priced hotels offer some of the best service. Make sure you know what you are getting from a more expensive room then you are from a mid range room. You might be paying the location, the service, the room décor or just for the name of the hotel.
If you arrive and are not happy with your room, immediately see the manager on duty and insist you be given a different room. Perhaps the room is not cleaned properly, or something is not working properly but they are unwilling or unable to change your room. If this is the case and it is part of a hotel chain you should report them to their corporate office. This might not benefit you directly but you’ll be doing your part to help other tourists in the future.
When you travel you should not have to worry about the hotel you have booked into. With a little research you can be confident in your choice and travel worry free leaving only the fun of your vacation to occupy your mind!
