Soon you’ll be off exploring the great blue yonder. Your looking forward to 2 full weeks of fun filled vacation. This is the time to relax, unwind, and rejuvenate. Then why do we often hear vacation horror stories? Read on to have the best time when you travel.
If you do your research and read up on your destination then you aren’t as likely to have any bad surprises. Good surprises are always fun but bad surprises can ruin a vacation.
Find out what the area has to offer, what kind of entertainment and activities you can look forward to and what they’ll cost. Learn if there are any health risks or security risks in the area. Find out about the crime rates and where you should avoid.
The internet has a wealth of current up to date information so from the comfort of your desk you can find out everything you need to know. You can research your destination, the hotel you plan to stay at, and even find out information about the local culture.
Depending on where you are traveling to and how long you are staying you may be required to get a travel visa. You may also be required to have certain vaccinations or take specific medications, such as with malaria, to reduce your risk of getting sick. Know what the requirements are well in advance so that you are prepared and have the appropriate paperwork upon departure.
If you are traveling outside the country you will need your passport. You should make two copies of the passport page that has your photo and personal information on it. Leave one with a friend or family member and take the other with you but store in a different location than your original passport. That way if you loose your passport you have all the necessary information available to you.
To some degree tourists are targets no matter where you travel. Some tourists are at greater risk than others because they don’t take the necessary precautions. Leave your expensive jewelry at home. Don’t be wondering around flaunting it or you are asking to be mugged or robbed.
Always carry your wallet in a secure place. Your back pocket is a prime target for a pick pocket, and purses that dangle over your shoulder are easy targets as well. Fanny packs work great as your wallet is safely tucked in a pouch that is in the front of you so there are no surprises. If you don’t’ have a fanny pack then put your wallet in an inside pocket that securely zips. If you are carrying a purse, put the strap on your shoulder but move the bag to the front of your body and hold snuggly.
You should have all your credit card details as well as phone numbers to contact your credit card company written out and stored in a safe place away from your wallet. It doesn’t hurt to also leave a copy with friends or family at home.
If you are going to be traveling or purchasing items at a destination that you don’t normally visit it’s a great idea to notify your credit card company of this. With fraud rates so high credit card companies are much more likely to stop purchases that do not meet your normal buying patterns.
Never leave your luggage unattended. The theft of your luggage would be bad enough but it’s really the least of your worries. Drug smugglers are always looking for ways to move their products and in the past many an innocent person has been arrested for trafficking of drugs that were found in their luggage. Often it was because they left their luggage unattended and drug dealers where quick to take advantage of the situation.
Before you go re-check your luggage. It’s easy to forget things and doing a double check makes it less likely that will happen. Sure you can always pick up things you forgot at your destination spot but it’s a lot less hassle if you don’t have to start your vacation by running around and buying those things you forgot.
Don’t forget about your prescriptions. If they are critical medications then you should bring two bottles and place each in a different place just incase your luggage gets lost or way laid. Putting one set in your carry on is a smart idea. In some countries you must also carry a copy of the prescription with you. Know the rules before you go. If you wear glasses you should also pack your spare pair.
Your carry on is rather like your emergency bag. Besides having your favorite book and your camera it should include your medications, one full change of clothes, and anything else you might need should your luggage get lost.
It’s not difficult to have the vacation of a lifetime if you just take the time to plan before you travel. When you’re prepared you’ll be able to look forward to your travel and make the most of your vacation!
