Wild Cats And Wildcats Teams Have Plenty In Common

The Moncton Wildcats Hockey team share a lot of similarities with the wild cats of the world. Perhaps that’s how they got their name. So what can a hockey team and wild cats have in common? Why lots!

Of course the Moncton Wildcats aren’t the only team that’s decided they should be named after such an aggressive wild creature. There’s the Adirondack Wildcats Basketball team, the Perth Wildcats Basketball team, the Kansas State Wildcats Football team, and of course plenty of other teams that have chosen the name wild cats.

And perhaps a great choice for a sports team. Now if you really stop to think about it wild cats, and the wild cats sports teams really do have plenty in common.

Both are agile. They can move at quick speeds while maintaining their balance and finding their target. Team players are aiming to score a goal, move another player out of the way, or some other activity related to helping their team maintain the edge. Wild cats want to cover large distances at high speeds to keep their prey in line and ready for the big kill. Rather like a hockey or basketball player isn’t it?

Both are able to perform in stealth mode. The wild cat’s prey never hears or sees it coming. That’s exactly what happens so often in sports. Especially hockey were all of a sudden a player finds himself checked into the boards, or sitting on his butt on the ice because an opponent used stealth speed to intercept before he even know it was coming.

Both can be extremely aggressive. Wild cats are not to be argued with! Not only are the agile and able to move in stealth mode, they can be extremely aggressive. Same with sport teams. In the last few years we’ve heard about several players that have been seriously injured because an opponent became to aggressive. Although not the initial intent it appears that the adrenalin gets going faster than the brain and suddenly all hell has broken loose for the love of the game. With wild cats its for the love of the prey.

Both are quick. Wild cats and wildcats teams share the ability to move quickly without hesitation. They both have the control to execute any move so quick that the opponent or prey does not have a change to realize what is going on.

Both are interesting to watch. Now grant it we have far more opportunity to watch the wildcats play live than we do to watch wild cats but the majority of us watch both on our television from the comfort of our favorite chair in the living room. Be it human cats or wild cats there never seems to be a dull moment. Both cats can keep you glued to the television in suspense of what’s to come next.

Both the wild cats and wildcat teams love to play. After all that’s what sport is about right? But their counterparts the wild cat also love to romp and play in their natural habitat. They aren’t always in hunt mode anymore than a sports team is. There are times when just some good clean fun and play is what’s needed. And both are extremely good at it!

Both are highly competitive. You already knew that’s what makes sports teams what they are. Sports are a competitive pastime. But I bet you didn’t realize that wild cats are also very competitive. They compete with each other for the mother’s attention, they compete for prey, they compete for habitat. It’s a life committed to competitiveness.

So perhaps these teams that take on the name wildcats are well aware of these shared qualities. Perhaps there is more to their name then just a name. Could it be that they have chosen their name in the hopes of living up to the natural skills of wild cats in their quest for victory on the playing field?
