Choosing the Right Mercedes Model

By: Jason Petrina

Owning a Mercedes is a dream that many people aspire to; however, you might be surprised to learn that the most difficult part of purchasing a Mercedes is choosing the model that is right for you. While Mercedes models can be priced at almost $200,000; there are actually several models that are well below the $50,000 mark. When considering which type of Mercedes would be best for your needs, you might consider four major factors. These are price, body style, horsepower and ability to go from zero to sixty within a specified period of time.

In terms of price, the least expensive Mercedes model is the C230 Sport Sedan; which starts out at just $29,975; while the most expensive model is the SL65 AMG, coming in at $185,775. The C230 Sport Sedan contains everything you would want in a luxury car, except the price. Features include chrome trim, blue-tinted glass, SmartKey, dual zone climate control, steering wheel control for audio system, 10-way adjustable front seats and Electronic Stability Program. The SL65 AMG is one of the most powerful Mercedes models on the market with 604 horsepower twin turbocharged V-12 engine and a host of quality features. It contains all the basic luxury features one would expect to find in a Mercedes along with these specifications: zero to sixty in less than 4.5 seconds, Formula One inspired front air dam, a host of features including seat belt, sun and humidity/dewpoint sensors to create a perfectly comfortable driving environment. Bose Cabin Surround, Sirrius Satellite Radio, Bose AudioPilot, GPS in-dash navigation and 24-hours live emergency assistance.

If your needs dictate a particular body style, you’ll be sure to find exactly what you need within the 10 different classes of Mercedes vehicles. Consumers will find sedans, coupes, cabriolets, roadsters, wagons, sport tourers and SUVs. Prices on sedans cover a lot of ground; beginning at $29, 975 with the C230 Sport Sedan and reaching up to $169,000 with the C65 AMG. Coupes begin at a slightly higher price with the CLK350 Cabriolet at $54,475 and extend up to $180, 375 with the CL600 AMG. Roadsters start out at around $43,000 with the SLK280 Roadster and top out at $185,775 with the SL65 AMG.

Both wagon models are contained in the E-class and range in price from $53,000 to $62,000. Similarly the two Sports Tourer models are found within the R class and range in price from approximately $48,000 to $56,000. SUVs are available beginning at $40,000 and extend up to $105,000 with the C55 AMG Grand Edition.

If power is more important to you than price or body style, consider that the various models of Mercedes are available beginning at 201 horsepower and reach all the way up to 604 horsepower. The C230 Sport Sedan and the E230 CDI Sedan each come in with 201 horsepower while three different models are capable of 604 horsepower. These models are the S65 AMG, CL65 AMG and the SL65 AMG. If you’re looking to find middle ground, there are a variety of models that hit around the 290 horsepower mark as well as the 490 HP mark.

Finally, be sure to consider the number of Mercedes models that are capable of reaching zero to sixty in less than five seconds. These models include sedans, coupes, a Roadster, SUV and variety of AMG models.

If you find that one of the more expensive Mercedes models is the only one that suits your needs, but the hefty price tag is more than you can swing, you might consider a certified pre-owned Mercedes. These vehicles are not even in the same ballpark as other ‘used’ vehicles. In fact, they have been so well cared for that you might not even notice you’re driving a pre-owned vehicle; except fort the considerable amount of money that you will save.
