As the winter season begins to approach people tend to get a little down. All our summer activities like biking, swimming, and hiking are quickly disappearing and we become gloomy with the idea of sitting around for the winter. Well it doesn’t have to be like that. There are plenty of winter sports you can enjoy.
There are plenty of sports that you and your family can enjoy through the winter and you won’t have to spend a fortune getting involved in these sports. How about tobogganing, skating, or skiing? All excellent choices and affordable.
If you live in a climate where it gets cold then you probably have access to outdoor skating rinks or a lake or pond that has frozen over. If you live in a climate that doesn’t get that cold most communities turn their arenas into indoor rinks for the winter months.
Do enjoy skating you just need skates, a warm jacket and some warm mittens. Skates come in a wide variety of price ranges. For recreational skating you can choose a low to mid range skate. The biggest concern is proper ankle support. Other than that it doesn’t really matter.
Most indoor rinks rent skates so you can start by renting skates. See how your or the family like skating. If it’s a hit you can then buy your own skates. Renting is a cheap way to go skating. They usually only charge a few bucks per pair. Of course if you plan to keep skating through out the winter your money would be better spent buying skates.
Tobogganing is another fun sport and it doesn’t require a whole lot of snow. Tobogganing doesn’t require a great deal of money. A warm coat, a hat, some mitts, and some boots. You can either purchase a wood toboggan, a plastic carpet, or even use a piece of cardboard or a plastic garbage bag. Be creative.
And if you are taking the kids out the hill doesn’t have to be big. In fact a gentle slope with no obstacles is best and safest. There’s probably a hill right near by that you can use. Make sure there is no chance of sliding out into a roadway or into danger. A fenced school yard with a gentle slope works well.
No kids, just the adults? Looking for more of a challenge? Go for it find a nice steep hill and get an adrenalin rush. Whether young or old you should wear a helmet when tobogganing to protect your head. Head injuries can be serious so don’t take a chance.
Tobogganing is a fun sport for both young and old. Take the tot with and take grandma and grandpa with too. Its great quality family time and so much fun!! Your kids will burn all that energy and sleep like a baby!
Skiing is also a terrific winter sport that’s fun for the whole family although it can be a little more expensive. You will either need to purchase skis, boots, and other gear, or rent it. If skiing is an occasional pass time you are probably better of renting it as it can be fairly costly to buy.
Don’t forget the cost of the lift pass and the trip to the mountain. They’ll cost you as well. If you decide to spend the weekend you’ll also have lodging costs. Be sure to book well in advance as ski resorts book up very quickly during the season.
There are other simple things you can do to enjoy the winter months. How about a walk along a trail taking in the sites and sounds of winter. What about bowling? Curling? Snowboarding? If you are in the country how about cross country skiing? The choices are truly endless if you stop and think about it.
So when winter arrives rather than getting bummed out and parking yourself in front of the television to get flabby and bored, why not be creative and find a winter sport you and your family or a friend can enjoy. What are you waiting for?
