Ordering Tips for Trophies

By: Jason Petrina

Trophies are extremely important types of memorabilia associated with a wide variety of accomplishments. Generally, they are linked to sporting accomplishments; however, trophies can make wonderful presentations for a wide variety of purposes. Due to the importance of trophies, it’s important to take special care when ordering them in order to ensure that you receive a trophy that is equal to the accomplishment it recognizes.

When choosing a trophy, you’ll need to decide first what field you want recognized. Trophies are available in a wide variety of sporting events including, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, swimming, etc. Trophies are also available for activities closely linked to sports such as cheerleading. While sports trophies are very popular, academic trophies are also available.

Most trophies contain several particular features and you will need to make detailed decisions regarding what you prefer on each of these features. One of the most important aspects of ordering a trophy is making a determination regarding the figure you want to be mounted on the top of the trophy. Usually, this figure is in some way connected to the accomplishment you are recognizing. There may also be a backdrop present behind the figure. Not all trophies need to have a backdrop, but if you feel it is appropriate, be sure to include one with your order.

Other important features include the riser and the trim. The riser is the element on the trophy on which the figure resides. One of the most common and popular types of risers is the traditional gold cup, but it is definitely not the only choice available in risers. Be sure to ask exactly what kind of options are available in risers when ordering a trophy.

The trim refers to the elements that are usually beside the riser. Frequently trim refers to numbers denoted the year the accomplishment was earned. For example, for an accomplishment earned in 1999; the trim might denote 19 on one side of the riser and 99 on the other side of the riser. Once again; however, while numbers are the most common type of trim, they are not the only kind so be sure to study all your options thoroughly before placing your order.

The columns connect the base to the riser. In smaller trophies there may only be one column, but larger trophies frequently feature double columns or even three, four or more columns. Usually, the taller the trophy; the more columns will be required to balance the overall height of the trophy. Columns are also available in a wide variety of colors and designs so you can usually find something that will perfectly suit your needs.

Between the columns one might also find what is known as the accent. Once again, this feature can vary tremendously in terms of style and design and even whether it is present at all or not. Study sample trophies of similar accomplishments to make a suitable determination regarding what will work best for your particular situation.

Finally, the trophy is comprised of a base and engraving. When providing the information to be engraved on the trophy to the trophy company, be very specific and exact. In fact, it’s really best to write, or even better, type the information for them so there is absolutely no doubt about what you want engraved on your trophy and how you want it spelled. Some companies charge differently for engraving, so be sure to find out exactly how you will be charged for engraving and if the cost is more for additional letters or whether there is a minimum charge for engraving.
