4 Popular Collectibles This Decade

When it comes to starting a collection your choices are endless. You can collect what ever is nearest and dearest to your heart. But we thought we’d share what the 4 most popular collectibles have been this decade.

Wedgwood often brings to mind Jasperware which was a popular pottery form of Wedgwood’s for many years. But Jasperware wasn’t Wedgwood’s only ticket to fame, and many of the other Wedgwood styles are also highly sought after.

Wedgwood dates back to 1730 with Jasperware hitting the market in 1775. Collectors refer to Old Wedgwood as the wares that were produced before 1795 which include Queens Ware, Black Basalt, Cane Ware, Rosso Antico, and of course Jasperware. Old Wedgwood can be hard to date so make sure you know your wares.

Now you all remember the Pez dispensers of your childhood don’t you? Who would have thought these crazy little dispensers would have become such a hot collectible. If we only had the ones from our childhood years we’d be rich.

In the United States the first Pez plastic candy dispensers arrived in 1952 but they actually started back in 1948 in Vienna where they were sold to carry breath mints. They were built with familiar character faces to look like a cigarette lighter.

The name Pez is from the German word “pfefferminz” which means peppermint. When they were introduced in America marketers took to putting children’s candy in them and developing character heads that were popular with the kids, such as Mickey Mouse or Santa.

If you are going to collect Pez dispensers be sure you get a book that contains the serial number breakdown so that you can date the Pez dispensers you are looking to buy or even the ones you already own.

Pez dispensers still in their original bag sealed bring the biggest dollars. And you might be surprised to find they have actually made their way back onto store shelves. So if you want to save a few dollars start collecting the modern Pez dispensers and over time they’ll be as collectible as the current ones are.

Fountain pens are another item that has become increasingly collectible over the past decade. There’s something sensual about the old fountain pens that makes them very appealing to collect, even though most of us spend a great deal more time writing on our computers than we do using a pen.

What s great about fountain pens is that you can often stumble across an excellent buy at an auction, flea market, or thrift store that may cost you a lot less than the true value.

Another perk to collecting fountain pens is that they are compact and take up very little room. Whether you display them in a case or on a wall you’ll need very little space, and they are so incredibly elegant and beautiful to look at.

E Waterman was the designer of the first modern style fountain pen dating back to 1883. Of course Parker and Schaeffer where quick to jump on the band wagon and begin producing their own line of fountain pens. All are highly collectible, especially the earliest ones.

The collecting of autographs has also become a popular and very interesting item to collect. Whether you collect celebrity autographs, sport stars, or those of other famous people is entirely up to you. Perhaps you’ll want to collect them all.

The only word of caution is that you need to make sure what you are buying is authentic. There is a great deal of forged autographed items floating around.

Collecting autographs can be a very interesting and rewarding pastime. And you might be surprised what some of this memorabilia becomes worth in the future.

What ever you choose to collect is up to you. The main thing is to have fun while you are doing it.
