Choosing The Right Interior Doors

Your interior doors do more than open and close, they provide a buffer between spaces, and they are an integral part of your home décor. So choosing the right interior doors deserves your full attention.

Doors are both a décor item and a functional item. Because there are so many different types of doors to choose from you need to know your requirements in advance. This will help you select not only the right type of interior door but also the right style and material.

Interior doors can be solid wood but more often then are hollow core wood or solid core wood. They are also available in fiberglass. Since interior doors aren’t subject to the environmental abuses and they aren’t designed with security in mind they are made from lighter materials than exterior doors.

There are several different types of interior doors including gliding doors, swinging doors, pocket doors, and folding doors.

Gliding doors have rollers on the bottom of the doorframe and wheels located on the track. The most common forms of gliding doors are patio doors and French doors.

Swinging doors are your standard door style with hinges mounted on the doors that mount to the door frame. There are a variety of swinging door styles to suit all your home décor needs.

Pocket doors slide along an overhead rail that is recessed into the wall. It’s the perfect door choice for tight spaces where you want the door completely out of the way. It opens up the entrance into the room considerably. They are very easy to install with new building but can involve quite extensive renovations with an existing structure.

The type of door you choose will depend on the functionality you want and the look you are striving to achieve in your home. French doors and patio doors work well for letting in large amounts of light and they can give a room a dramatic entrance. But they are not appropriate for all locations so be sure to do your homework.

Interior doors are available in solid wood, glass and wood, louvered, and half glass so find the right door to compliment your room shouldn’t be too difficult. Remember that the finish on the door is also an important part of the décor.

Generally the door frame and the door are finished with the same technique either stain or paint. Using the same finish completes the look. However with paint you can get creative and paint the door frame and door contrasting colors to draw attention.

We must not forget that the basic function of a door is to create a buffer so choosing doors that are insulated well is important especially for bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices. A solid core door can do this job the best.

It’s a common mistake to go all out and install insulation panels on walls and then budget on the doors buying less expensive hollow core doors defeating their entire purpose and wasting money on the insulation panels that cannot be effective without the correct door. So don’t skimp in the end.

Interior doors are a substantial cost of any remodeling or building project and after getting the quote for the number of doors you need you might be tempted to choose lower priced doors. Don’t! Lower price also means lower quality and you may not only the effectiveness of the door such as the sound deadening qualities you may also destroy the look of your room.

Since you’ve spent so much money to get to where you are in with your project don’t go cheap in the end. You will regret it! Instead look for the right door for the best price. Shop around. There are substantial savings to be had. Choosing the right interior doors for your home is important!
