Color, it’s everywhere we look, everywhere we turn. Color is important to us. It is symbolic as in green with envy or in a blue mood. It has psychological effects and color has meaning. So when you color your world you tend to color it with the colors you favor. Are you a blue person?
Why are some people drawn to red while others are drawn to green? Color is a personal choice and the colors we favor tend to reflect a lot about our personality, character, and our overall makeup. So why are people drawn to blue?
Blue is a calming color and it is also a cool color. It can be strong and steadfast or friendly and light hearted depending on the shade. Blue can make you sleep better or it can make time pass quicker. In some countries blue even has significant religious connotations for bringing peace and keeping the bad or evil spirits at bay. Blue is a color that almost everyone likes and few dislike.
Take a look around the color of your world and see where you find blue. It’s in the sky above us, it’s in the lakes, rivers, and oceans, it’s a choice of mother nature making it a universal color.
Blue is often a color used in bedrooms because of it’s calming affects but you also have to be careful because too much blue can dampen your sprits and put you in a funk.
Have you ever wondered why blue is a popular suit color in the corporate world or why policemen wear blue uniforms? That’s because blue is a color that portrays power, authority, and confidence. It is also associated with unity, stability, and intelligence.
Colors are also very emotional. We’ve all “saw red” at some point meaning emotionally we were furious and we’ve all “felt blue” meaning we’ve been sad or in the dumps. Blue is not a violent emotion but rather a mellow emotion that can sometimes takes us down to the sad end of the scale or be associated with feeling meloncoly.
Did you know that in Iran the color of blue is associated with mourning the dead yet in the western world blue is a wedding color associated with love and traditional to weddings. Color has different meanings in different countries.
So how do different shades of blue appeal to us? Deeper blues or the azure shade a rich and plush while navy blue is warmer than blues that are lighter. Pastel blues are considered spring and summer colors while darker blues are considered fall and winter colors.
Blue mixed with gray or dark blue with metallic silver is considered elegant. Light blue with dark blue is conservative and conveys a message of trust. While sky blue with tans or beige is considered friendly.
Blue and white is considered nautical, while red, white, and blue is considered patriotic. Tone down your image by adding blue to red or orange or grab attention by combining yellow and blue.
The fashion industry commonly uses color to portray both positive and negative messages. That is why you will see different shades in different styles of clothes such as casual or formal dress.
There are also shades of blue that are considered good while others are considered bad. The use of blue in a good way includes many phrases.
For example if you hear someone refer to baby blues they are referring to blue eyes. The Blues when capitalized is talking about a popular style of music. A Bluebook is a register of prominent people or prominent sea going vessels. Blueblood is a person born of nobility or royalty. Out of the blue mean something unexpected occurred. And true blue means loyal to one.
There are also negative connotations for the word blue such as feeling blue which means you are sad or depressed. Baby blues is a post partum depression, while blue Monday means you feel sad. Singing the blues means you are telling your sad tale, while blue language means profanity.
Did you know blue is even an appetite suppressor? So if you want to loose a few pounds by eating a little less serve your food on blue plates, put a blue bulb in your refrigerator, add a blue bulb to your dining room, or dye your food blue.
Blue is very uncommon in our natural foods except for a few fruits thus we don’t have a natural appetite response to it. In fact our natural response is to avoid blue foods because they are poisonous or have gone bad. In fact marketers know their product blue would result in reduced sales because consumers turn away from blue food.
Why not color your world with cobalt, navy, beryl, azure, sapphire, baby blue, sky blue, royal blue, robin’s egg blue, midnight blue, steel blue, slate blue, cornflower blue or Prussian blue to name just a few of the blue color choices. Are you a blue person? Then have some fun with it!
