Women’s fashion trends may come and go but one thing is for certain pants are going to remain a staple wardrobe item. Styles may change from season to season but they will remain steadfast and true to the women who wear them for almost any occasion or activity. So how do you choose pants that flatter your body shape?
Pants are the number one wardrobe item. Women want to wear pants that look great and are comfortable at the same time whether you are sitting or walking. That’s why the style you choose is so important.
The first thing you need to know is which styles to avoid for your body shape. There are three basic styles – flared, fitted, and straight. The style you choose should flatter your body shape.
Darts, pleats, pockets, yokes, waistlines, and seams are used to shape the style and create either a vertical or horizontal illusion. Always choose an overall style that is flattering.
Here are some tips worth remembering. If you are short you can look taller by wearing the same color on the top and bottom. If you are taller you can look shorter by wearing different colors top and bottom.
If you want to create fullness use a wide legged pant. If you are too thin or too heavy stay away from fitted legs. Flared legs flatter the tall slender figure while straight legs are a better choice if you have full thighs or a larger derriere.
Pleats and gathers are not good if you have a larger tummy as they emphasize the waist. If your figure is really curvy then avoid a side zipper and try to find pants that have two waist line darts.
Fabric also is important when it comes to choosing pants that will be flattering. All types of fabrics such as denim, corduroy, velveteen, cotton, knits, and medium weight blends are used for pants. Unless you’ve got a perfect figure it’s wise to avoid fabrics that cling as they will emphasize your faults.
Consider both the design and the texture of fabric when buying pants. Some fabrics can be uncomfortable because they are itchy or bulky. Make sure the pattern is appropriate to your size and shape and as well to the style of the pants.
A proper fit will make your pants attractive and comfortable. They should fit snugly at the waist and then fit smoothly but not overly tight through the hips and thighs. Pants do not fit correctly if they ripple at the waist, wrinkle or bag in the crotch, if the press seam is off center, and if the waistline is pulling either at the back or the front.
Pants should fit your body shape nicely but should not be too snug. Tight fitting pants will be uncomfortable and they will show your body flaws.
Monochromatic or one color dressing is a very popular slimming trick used by the fashion industry and actresses for decades. It works because the use of one color produces a strong vertical line that makes the body appear thinner and taller.
Other slimming tricks include avoiding heavy fabrics that add bulk, using darker colors such as blue and black, placing bright colors near your face to draw away and make you appear slimmer, and avoid white which makes everyone look wider!
Remember heals can also make you look slimmer so if you are comfortable in a heel use it to your advantage. Make sure your pants are adequately long enough to wear with heels as nothing looks worse than pants that are too short!
Color can be a lot of fun and when you’re purchasing pants you should experiment and find colors that suit you. Remember not to overdo it with the colors. If you’re choosing bold pants then keep your top simple and more subtle. If you are choosing pants that have a pattern then choose a solid color top. Try before you buy!
No matter what your body shape there are pants available that can flatter your figure!
