Tips For Maxing The Power From Your Car

Modern day cars pack a lot of technology and an amazing amount of horsepower in such small engines compared to the past. Modern day cars also have several compromises built into them. Here are some tips for maxing the power from your car with these compromises.

These compromises are built into the cars in an effort to stay within a specific price range, to maximize the reliability and life of the engine, and to meet current emissions standards. The great thing about these compromises is in most cases they also give you lots of ways that you can improve the performance of your car.

There are a variety of ways to increase the power your stock engine has. Some of these methods are more expensive than others. All show improvements. Be sure to do more thorough research to determine which methods might be best for your particular car.

1. Change the computer chips - In some of the cars you can change the performance of your car by changing the ROM chip that’s located in the ECU. You buy these chips from aftermarket performance dealers and they are readily available online from several websites. Be sure to do your research and read all the reviews on the chip you are considering using.

2. More Air - Air resistance robs your engine of horsepower. The more air the more power so make sure air comes in easily by installing a larger air filter or reducing the intake pipe.

3. Heads and Cams - Okay this ones going to hurt the pocket book a bit but purchasing a new head that has 4 valves per cylinder or buying a performance can will increase the engine performance and usually quite substantially. Check with online performance websites for details relating to your car’s engine.

4. Turbo Charger - The more air and thereby the more fuel you can get into the cylinder the more power you’ll be rewarded with. Both super chargers and turbo chargers can force more air into the cylinder. In fact many manufacturers produce aftermarket chargers for their cars and if they don’t chances are a high performance parts manufacturer does.

5. Cool It - The hotter the air entering the cylinder the less it expands when combustion occurs thus if you can compress the air it will raise the temperature and that’s why so many turbo and super chargers have an intercooler. An intercooler is a special style radiator that cools the compressed air before it gets to the cylinders.

6. Lighten Up - The lighter the overall weight of your vehicle the more power you’ll see from your engine. Lighter parts will increase performance and they also allow the engine to rev faster which produces more horsepower.

7. Compression Ratio - The higher the compression ration on your engine the more power you’ll have up to a certain point. However the more you compress the fuel-air mix the more chance there is that is will burst into flame spontaneously before the spark plug ignites. This can be prevented by using a high octane gas.

8. Increase Displacement - The more displacement the more power you will have because each revolution of the engine burns more gas. To increase your displacement you need to make the cylinders bigger by have them bored. You might want to consider if it’s cheaper to simply replace your current engine with a high performance engine.

Maxing the power from your car can be relatively affordable. Just a few small tweaks can provide you with those extra ponies you were looking for!
