Plus Size Fashion Tips To Look Your Best

By: Andrea Morris

The fashion world has no shortage of advice on what to wear and what not to wear, and on things to do and to avoid. Plus size fashion is equally filled with tips that can help you look your best, and also includes some advice that you should ignore. Let's examine some of the myths that concern fashion for larger women.

Another common myth is that if you are plus size, showing any skin is definitely out. However, this is not true! There isn't a logical reason for any woman, plus size or regular size, to completely hide her body. Whatever your body flaws, there are also flattering features about you. Find out your positive assets and then find clothes that show them off! If you have great legs, wear short skirts to emphasize them. If you have a beautiful, busty figure than try low scoop necks or V cuts.

Plus girls should never bare their arms. Sleeveless shirts have long been touted as a no-no for plus size women, but this is just not true! Showing a little skin can be flattering and make you feel sexy. However, if you are not comfortable baring your upper arms, you can drape a pretty, sheer shawl over your shoulders. A shrug is another great way to cover your upper arms, or you can get a shirt with lace or chiffon sleeves. That way you can bare your arms without showing too much skin!

Another common myth is that plus size women should never wear horizontal stripes. This is just plain silly. Stripes, whether vertical diagonal or even horizontal, can be flattering. There are, however, a few rules regarding the placement of the stripes that are worth considering. If your hips are your widest point, then you should wear horizontal stripes on other parts of your body, such as your upper body or on your legs.

Plus girls should stay away from bold prints. Pay no attention to this myth! The effect of the print upon a plus-sized silhouette is determined by the spacing of the print. Look for prints with overlapping edges, not those whose major elements are widely spaced. Remember that bold and large-sized fabric designs will flatter you!

The conventional wisdom usually goes something like, "plus size girls should wear baggy clothes." Often plus size women believe this myth, shying away from form-fitting and flattering clothing for oversized sweatpants and sweatshirts. But instead of looking for clothes that hide your body, look for clothes that are body-conscious. Look for flattering attire than hint at your curves and emphasize them. Try the "tight-loose" rule: Wear a fitted top under a looser-fitting jacket, for example. You don't want an all-over clingy fabric that hugs your figure in all the wrong places, but don't be afraid to show off those fabulous curves either!

Myth: Plus size women should avoid white clothes. Truth: Dark neutrals like navy, grey and black are slimming, but you can include other colors in your wardrobe too. Pair a dark color with white or a lighter color to focus attention on your assets. If you're pear-shaped, wear dark trousers with a sparkling white top or a pretty pastel blouse. Plus sizes are not doomed to a closet full of darks. Let in the light! Wear pastels, bold primary colors and, yes, white too.
