The third season of the A1-Grand-Prix-Series approaches to the end. Seven of the ten races already took place. After this last race the German Team dropped down to fifth place. The reason for this relegation was the disqualification from the valuation of the sprint race which took place on Sunday 24th of February in the South-African city Durban. This was decided by the race stewards who blamed the German team to have caused an avoidable accident with an A1 car from the Team Netherlands. Due to this occurrence the chance for the German team to win the title has been lowered to zero. With only three races to go it is almost impossible for the team as they are 41 points behind the Swiss leader team.
Willi Weber who founded the German Team in 2005 is upset about the decision. His opinion is that the penalty was imposed wrongfully because the accident was not the only one during this weekend but the only one penalized. "It is not been seen why the imposed penalties vary so much. It cannot be in the interest of the sport that the penalties distinguish in unpredictability in the first place. I am expecting a clear answer and I will keep at it."
For the German Team it is the third season and they already achieved one title in 2006/2007. Different from the other motorsports at the A1-Grand-Prix national teams take on against each other. So it all depends on the performance of all participating drivers. Besides all 22 national team drive with uniform cars which are optical similar to the Formula 1 cars. All drivers have the same nationality as the respective team they are driving for. Most successful member of the German team in this season is Nico Hlkenberg who on the side is also test driver for the Formula 1 team Williams. With overall six victories in main races and three victories in sprint races the 20-year-old holds the record in the A1-GP-Series.
The A1-GP-Series takes place every year from September to April when all other motorsports take a winter break. The A1 races are held all over the world in every continent. The first seven races already finished and they took place in the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, China, New Zealand, Australia and Africa. The remaining three races are going to be in Mexico, China and Great Britain.
