In order to understand how a cable descrambler or a cable network works, you must understand how the image on your TV appears.
The image you receive on your TV set travels through a special type of cable that is installed by cable network companies anywhere in cities, neighborhoods and even from one house to the other. All these cables compose a cable network, through which the TV signal runs so you can watch your favorite shows in the comfort of your home. But having TV signal to your set at home does not necessarily mean that you have access to absolutely every TV channel that exists. A method used by cable companies to protect their incomes is to scramble to TV channels in order to hinder those that do not pay to enjoy their services for free. Even if you have all the necessary cable equipment, if the TV channels are scrambled, you will not see anything on your TV screen. So, cable companies do not only install the cable equipment in your home, but also a descrambler. This is a piece of equipment that is attached to the TV set. After installing it, the company will activate it for you. When you do not pay your bill, your descrambler will become inactive and you will not be able to watch TV anymore. This is the whole process at the end of which you get to see crystal clear images on your TV.
Cable companies scramble the TV signal because they want to protect their business. If everybody had descrambled TV signal on the TV sets, then the companies would lose a lot of money. Therefore, they came with this idea, of scrambling the TV channels and to have them descrambled for you the moment you pay your bill to the cable company. For the service of descrambling the TV signal, all the cable companies charge a fee; it is their way to make a profit.
The image on your TV is the result of the cable descrambler action; it is this device that transforms the TV signal into image. Cable companies offer cable descramblers for their premium channels or for pay-per-view. After paying the necessary fees, you will enjoy watching your favorite channels, like HBO, as the cable company descrambled the signal for you.
In the last years, another generation of cable descramblers has entered the market. These are digital descramblers, whose main role is to descramble digital cable signal. There is no much difference between standard descramblers and these, except for the fact that they descramble the digital signal.
When buying a cable descrambler, you can choose between a normal cable descramble or a digital one. It is advisable to go for the digital one as the technology is progressing fast and more and more cable companies are tempted to remove the old standard descramblers in order to replace them with new, digital ones.
