Nautical Star Tattoos - What Do They Express?

By: Graham Lavery

Stars are a common symbol and many people have different beliefs about what they could mean. This is a reason why stars have become a popular design for tattoos and why many people like to have stars imprinted in their skin. If you never tried getting a tattoo before, you can try your first with adorning your body with a beautiful star. What is also great about getting a star tattoo is that are so many designs with stars that you will get a tattoo that is unique and beautiful in the same time.

This is not a pretentious tattoo, so to speak. It does not address to a certain gender, or age or cultural heritage, so it can be gotten by anyone. Also, the tattoo artist has a lot of freedom in painting your body with a tattoo that can talk a lot about your special personality.

Many people like to get nautical star tattoos. These are often associated with boats and the art of sailing over seas and oceans. So this kind of design is very much to the liking of a person that loves water or things associated with water. You will see many sailors that are very attached to the nautical stars painted on their body. Stars have an unique significance in the life of the sailor. Ages ago, when technology was not even a word, sailors used the stars to guide them home, which explains the tight bond between them. Feelings of security and love that were associated with the concept of home transferred to the stars, so a person choosing a tattoo representing a nautical star has decided for this design because it means that he or she is trying to find a path in life. Also, sailors that got home safe and sound due to the guiding mild light of the stars expressed their gratitude by adorning their bodies with such tattoos.

In time, nautical star tattoos have also gained a different significance. They are also adopted by different groups and wearing such a tattoo corresponds to the person belonging to a certain group. This kind of tattoo has been adopted by gays, lesbians and punks over the years and in time, the nautical star has become a tribal symbol. It was almost like a secret language between people belonging to a group. In the forties and the fifties, gays and lesbians were wearing nautical star tattoos to recognize each other.

Lesbians usually wear tattoos on the inside of their wrists, but the nautical star tattoos have become more visible in this group and they are often presented as a sign of solidarity with the lesbians from different ages that were oppressed for their sexual preferences. Nautical stars also appear on the elbows of punk fans that consider this tattoo to indicate the north as a symbol of home, a concept that is close related to the North Star that guided the sailors home.
