I don't think it's fair that I get knocked for my dog's Nascar dog collar when my girlfriend dresses her dog up in sweaters and pink frilly dresses. I love my girlfriend, but we are two very different people, what with my love for sports and her love for Legally Blonde. We often take our pups to the dog park together, and though they have fun together, the playful arguing always strikes up between my girlfriend and I. She'll have Elle, her shitzu, all decked out in a "white frilly tank and pink mini" and I will have Manny, my English bulldog, looking stylish in one of his MLB dog jerseys. Any passersby overhearing our conversation would think the verbal sparring between my girl and I over canine fashion was quite amusing. My whole stance on the girlie dog clothes phenomenon is that it makes these poor little dogs look even more ridiculous than some of them already do! Secondly, they always seem super uncomfortable, both physically and egotistically. I tell my girl that she specializes in canine ego bruising. The poor little things! She even has a little male pug that she dresses up in tracksuits and polo shirts! It makes me feel so bad for him. One day, when I was over at my girl's house and she wasn't looking, I slipped one of the NFL dog collars I had over the pug's head. I adjusted it, gave him a manly pat, and sent him after his mama. When she saw him she nearly shrieked to see that I had removed his doggy patchwork bell bottoms and replaced them with a simple, but distinguished New York Giants collar. But payback, as they say, can be pretty darn bad. I was caught unawares one day coming out of the shower when I noticed one of Manny's favorite MLB dog jerseys just lying there on the floor. Now, this isn't how I treat my dogs clothes, so I knew something was wrong. Furthermore, it took me a moment to recall that Manny had been wearing that jersey just minutes ago. I had left my girlfriend downstairs, seemingly engrossed in a movie, but little did I know that she was up to no good until I found Manny. There he came, wondering into my room reluctantly, looking confused and slightly disturbed...wearing a pink polka dot doggy dress, complete with a pink doggy headband with a bow at the ear. It looked like a pink crayon had thrown up on my dog. My girlfriend had gotten me good! To make matters worse, she came running in with the camera, practically dying of laughter. There I was, half naked, struggling to hold onto my towel while trying to get the clothes off Manny--my girlfriend snapping picture after picture. I finally got those horrible clothes off of him, found the first thing I could find to help redeem his masculinity--a Nascar dog collar--and put it on him quickly. I may have managed to salvage Manny's pride, but there were still pictures, and shortly thereafter, they were off in an email to all of my friends. The tirade is forever ingrained in my memory, but I've learned a valuable lesson: I don't mess with my girlfriend's canine couture, and she won't mess with my MLB dog jerseys.
