One of the most popular pub games in the UK, darts is a game that is fast becoming popular with people the world over. What is important is not who plays the game, but how the game is played. When it comes to darts its not just about the 18 inch circular board, its more about how people have gathered in pubs and bars all over the UK and come together to play darts.
If this is the first time you have come across the game of darts then don’t worry, darts is a very simple game. A dart board is a circular board with various scoring zones marked out on it. Apart from the centre of the board (also referred to as the ‘bulls eye’) the standard dartboard is divided into 20 numbered sections, scoring from 1 to 20 points, by wires running from the small central circle to the outer circular wire. Circular wires within the outer wire subdivide each section into single, double and triple areas. Darts is a great way to improve your concentration and hand eye co-ordination.
Scoring in the game of darts is a little more complex, and there are more than one ways in which a person can score points. However the basic rules are pretty much the same, the bulls eye is further divided into the inner bull and the outer bull. Any dart that lands in the inner bull gets 50 points, and in the outer bull it gets 25 points. In addition the board is further divided into green and red strips. However the most points a person can score in darts is not from three bulls eyes, surprisingly if a person manages to land 3 consecutive darts in the green strips, he is awarded 180 marks and this is called a ‘triple’. In fact, if you have ever watched a darts game and wondered why players are aiming for the thin green strips instead of the inner bull this is why. There are numerous variations to the game of darts, and depending on the understanding between the players and the referees N number of combinations can be tried out.
The British were the first to popularise darts as a professional sport, and the British Darts Organisation (BDO) was formed in 1973 and later became a member of the World Darts Foundation (which incidentally was founded after the BDO in 1976). In 1992 a break away organisation called the WDC (World darts council) was formed and was later renamed the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC).
Today the PDC and the WDF both hold independent world championships, and players from all over the world compete in these competitions. The most successful darts player ever Phil Taylor (13 time world champion) is now a part of the PDC and is expected to be joined by other world darts players. Both the PDC and the WDF world championships are extremely popular in the UK and other European countries. If you want to play darts professionally, then a good learning ground is watching both the world championships.
