Who will Be The Next Miss Universe ?

Miss Universe is an annual beauty contest that just as its name implies runs on an international scale. It’s a prestigious event that women from around the world rally to be part of. So who will be the next Miss Universe?

Miss Universe got its roots back in 1952 when Pacific Mills a clothing company from California came up with the brain child. It then became part of Kayser Roth and in 1996 Donald Trump purchased it.

It’s a constant friendly rivalry between Miss World and Miss Universe. However in many parts of the world it is Miss Universe that remains the most prestigious. This is especially true in Latin American countries.

Yolande Betbeze Miss America in 1951 refused to wear Catalina Swimwear, so the manufacturer Pacific Mills withdrew its support from the Miss America pageant and set up the Miss Universe pageant.

In 1952 Long Beach California hosted the first Miss Universe pageant which was won by Finland’s Armi Kuusela. By 1955 the pageant had made it to television and was viewed by hundreds of thousands.

Up until 1972 the pageant was held within the United States each year. In 1972 it was hosted in Dorado Puerto Rico and since then it is hosted in a different city around the world each year.

In 2005 the pageant was held in Bangkok Thailand. The choice of this location was to help encourage tourists to return to the areas that had been struck by the tsunami. It was hoped that the additional interest would benefit the local economies.

Natalie Glebova, Miss Canada, became Miss Universe for 2005 while Miss Puerto Rico was 1st runner up, followed by Miss Dominican Republic as 2nd runner up.

Where 2006’s pageant will be held remains to be seen. Bayamon, Montevideo, Perth, Bangkok, Rio-de-Janeiro, Moscow, Cancun, and San Salvador have all supplied bids, so we know it will be one of these 8 cities.

Today Miss Universe Organization is a owned by NBC and Donald Trump and the current president is Paula Shugart. It is based out of New York and it also produces two other beauty contests Miss Teen USA and Miss USA.

To compete in the Miss Universe pageant there are a variety of criteria depending on what country you live in. In most countries the candidate is involved in other major pageants which then produce winners who compete and national pageants for an opportunity to run in the Miss Universe pageant.

The contest is about much more than beauty. The women must be cultured, well mannered, and intelligent. Competition is tough and winning a real challenge. All contestants should consider themselves winners in every sense of the word. Participating in this pageant is a major accomplishment!

The winner spends their year representing their country and title. They are involved in a variety of functions, and attend events and parties around the planet. Involvement in charitable organizations and fundraisers is also an important part of the duties.

Don’t miss the Miss Universe pageant which is held each year during May or June. Who will be crowned this year? We’ll just have to wait and see.
